Introduction to the Sandhills

The Sandhills of Nebraska are a unique geological formation. The largest sand dune formation in the Western Hemisphere, covering an area of 19,600 square miles. These rolling hills of sand are stabilized by the various varieties of prairie grasses that grace them. This makes them the World’s largest ‘grass-stabilized sand dune’ formation.

The Sandhills were initially classified as a “desert” in the pioneer days of the middle 1800’s because of the apparent lack of water. But when ranchers who settled on the edge of the Sandhills found their ‘lost’ cattle returning in the Spring after presuming them to be given up for dead during the harsh Winter, they realized that there was indeed water in this so-called desert. The discovery of water opened the way for ranchers and cowboys to settle in this unique grassland.

This unique geological formation rich in culture and history, imbued with the hospitality of its inhabitants, provides many opportunities for people both familiar and unfamiliar with this area to “experience” the wonders of the Sandhills.
